Inspiration from NYC’s James Farley Post Office

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. Nor inclement weather, nor sleet stop us.

The inscription on the James Farley Post Office in New York City.

This quote is also in keeping with the amazing attitudes of the Oakridge Seniors’ Centre Nordic Walkers.

Well, I guess the weather wasn’t that bad today because at 08:30 they already started to come in. Poles and purses in hand.

We sat down together before heading out into the misty gray morning.

Joan told us about the dream she had last night. Five foot and half an inch Carol said she messed up her remote controller again, and after a lengthy conversation with her son, asking him if she should crawl behind the TV and try to unplug it, it was decided he would be coming over tonight to un-mess it.

The conversations segue to what to order from chef for breakfast when they return to what was in my smoothie that made it look so awful. The stragglers arrived and were greeted with warm smiles, hugs and the news of the day.

At nine o’clock we were ready to go. We stretched, played the memory name game and left the building.

The rain stayed high in the clouds, while we stood upright pushing our poles forward, building our cores, improving our balance and talked about things that matter.

There were no complaints, everyone wanted to be there. Together walking.

They are not Canada Post workers, they are the Nordic walkers of The Oakridge Seniors Centre.

Beautiful, strong and trying to be healthy; they are seniors and having a ball, even in the drizzle.

Be a part of something healthy and special; join us at The Oakridge Seniors Centre every Thursday morning. This program is sponsored by Homecare West and is free for all participants.
