Types Of Dementia

Dementia with Lewy Bodies

Caused by abnormal ‘Lewy bodies’ deposits of protein called alpha-synuclein inside of the brain’s nerve cells – shares many similarities with Parkinson’s disease.

Vascular Dementia

The most common type of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia occurs when the brain’s blood supply is blocked or damaged, causing brain cells to be deprived of oxygen and die.

Young On-Set Dementia

When symptoms of dementia start before the age of 65, we use the term ‘young onset dementia’.

Parkinson's

Parkinson's care

Types Of Parkinsonims

Multiple System Atrophy (MSA)

The Average age of onset is in the mid-50’s.

Symptoms may include stiffness and poor balance.

There are no specific tests for MSA therefore diagnosis is made based on clinical features.

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP)

The average age of onset is in the mid-60’s and is the most common degenerative type of atypical parkinsonism.

Although there is no specific test for PSP,  the prescribed treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms such as frequent falls and difficulty swallowing.

Corticobasal Syndrome (CBS)

The average age begins after age 60.

Again, there is no specific test and treatment is symptom focused.

Symptoms may include difficulty with language and motor tasks.
