International Self Care Day – July 24th

International Self Care Day History

International Self-Care Day encourages the promotion of a healthy lifestyle. According to World Health Organization, self-care is the ability to focus on one’s own health without the help of a health care provider.

“Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure.”

Remaining in good health as an older adult requires much more than what medication and treatment alone have to offer.

Looking after ourselves is something we tend to put on the back burner especially in the last few months. For those of us that have been caring for our favourite senior and neglecting ourselves July 24th is the day to focus on you.

Five things to practice

Get plenty of sleep. Easy to say and not so easy to do sometimes. Take a break with a book, close your eyes and your mind even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Eat real food:

Eat food that doesn’t come in a package. Although it takes extra time to wash & slice, you’re worth the time.

Take time to move your body:

Put your favourite music on, dance, tap your toes, lift your heals up off the ground. All movement is good movement.

Call someone you love:

Isolation can cause emotional distress. Hearing a familiar voice and sharing your day with someone you love can make a difference in how you feel.

Be thankful:

Count your Blessings, big and small.

Even if you feel there’s not much to smile about. Fake it till you make it, it works.
